However, for a concise but authoritative summary of the design history and careers of the major surface ships it is difficult to beat a series of six volumes written by Gerhard Koop and illustrated by Klaus-Peter Schmolke. Each contains an account of the development of a particular class, a detailed description of the ships, with full technical details, and an outline of their service, heavily illustrated with plans, battle maps and a substantial collection of photographs. These have been out of print for ten years or more and are now much sought after by enthusiasts and collectors, so this new modestly priced reprint of the series will be widely welcomed.   This volume is devoted to the six ships from Emden to Nürnberg that were built between the wars. They were primarily intended for commerce-raiding, but the war gave them few opportunities for such employment, although they did provide useful support for key naval operations in the Baltic and North Sea. Two were lost in the 1940 Norway campaign, but the remainder survived for most of the conflict.   “A ship-by-ship history of the cruisers. In "German Light Cruisers", author Gerhard Koop gives the reader a very good treatment of the Kriegsmarine's light cruisers. It's a good source of information on these rakish craft.The author looks at each ship, the dates the keels were laid and ships launched. The specifications of the ships' armor, weapons, propulsion, navigation, gunnery (rangefinders, fire control) are laid out in a logical, methodical fashion. We learn about the captains and officers of these ships. The author briefly writes about their combat histories which are unfortunately brief.There are many excellent period photos of these ships in peacetime showing these craft sailing the world, "showing the flag" in foreign ports and going through the Panama Canal. There are a lot of pictures of ordinary sailors from the "lower decks" and the weapons (the Germans armed their cruisers with 150mm main guns which comes out to 5.9" as opposed to British and American light cruisers armed with 6" guns).Really, the photos and the specifications are the draw of this book since their combat careers were short and unsuccessful. I think these were impressive designs. For some reason, German designs - whether for aircraft, tanks, ships or even cars - look very different than those of other peoples and always impressive whether they were successful in their roles of not.But, for the Kriegsmarine fan, this book is a must have. Five stars.
