I really like the world Ilona Andrews has created for her stories. Very magical and different than most books on the market. I didn't, however, necessarily feel this was one of her best stories. It's a little darker than the other stories I've read and it's missing that balance between light and dark I feel is so important in order to be a satisfying story.I also felt that the two main characters were an odd match. I was very much looking forward to seeing who William ended up with, and Cerise just didn't quite fit him (not that she was bad or anything, it was just hard to see what would compel them to be together other than close proximity). I was also hoping we'd get to see William grow emotionally (learning that he was worthy of love and wasn't a "monster") and that didn't happen all that much. I was hoping Cerise would be his "port in the storm" kind of love (comforting and safe), but she was too busy with everything else so it just felt more like they were two characters working in parallel toward a common goal and then there was a couple moments of "oh, by the way, I love you".So, my overall take on this book is that it was just one big, long fight to the death between the good guys and all the various bad guys (and there were many, many bad guys). Kind of interesting, but after a while you start wondering why you're investing all this time reading the book.
