I just finished THE OPIUM EQUATION; A Cat Enright Mystery. This is a great read for those who love mysteries, horses, and unusual characters! Anyone who has spent time in a small town, Nashville, and/or the horse world knows they are likely to run into some interesting characters with interesting lives and, more importantly, colorful pasts.Lisa Wysocky doesn't disappoint with this yarn of mystery and, ultimately, suspense. Even the horses have unusual personalities and anyone who knows horses, knows this to be true!Wysocky tells the story in a manner that is much like a long letter filled with news and color, describing the events of her life. Written with a natural first person cadence and pace, you learn not only what the heroin does but what she is thinking and how she reflects on her actions. Are they deep, complicated, or highly intellectual thoughts? No! They are the sort of thoughts the reader could imagine having if placed in the same situation. That is what makes the story feel so genuine despite some of the strange events that occur.Do we gain deep insights into all of the characters? No! We only learn about the ones who really matter to the story. The others are likely to take center stage in future Cat Enright Mysteries. We just get a taste of them now, knowing there is much more to learn just below the surface. I am anxious to see who we find in the middle of the next mess!I read some of the other reviews posted here and a few were negative. No book is for everyone but if you are looking for a light and entertaining mystery that includes horses, unusual (yet believable) characters, and a heroine who is an authentic horsewomen with less than perfect characteristics (not some dolled up Hollywood version) then this is the book for you.PS: If you like chocolate and good southern comfort food, prepare yourself for a hankering.PPS: If you ever thought your pet was psychic, you might be right!
